RE: Whats the harm in running RV battery out of power?

"The electric brakes on an RV can't activate without "electric"!" Whoohoo thanks! What I was attempting to state is that not all break away brakes run off of the battery system utilized by the TT. For instance my flatbed has its own separate smaller battery connected and contained with in the system (you will find that many of these breakaway systems utilize the same separate battery system for safety sake)...so this means that the batteries running down in your TT would not matter if you have the same system I am describing. Separate battery for brakes than for TT. One has no bearing on the other. Clear as mud I hope!:p

RE: Whats the harm in running RV battery out of power?

Wait, I thought the break away switch was manually activated. As in if the break away brake wire connected to your hitch from the trailer is pulled when the trailer disconnects then the brakes lock on the trailer. I know I do not have batteries on my flat bed trailer and it appears to be the same type of break away brake system and I KNOW that works!! I know nothing about the original post though, sorry!:B

RE: Does it matter?

Some great responses, Thank You all. This question was asked as a means to see how grounded the other members were in who and what they are. To me money matters to the point of being safe. I would never skimp on something that affects my families safety or yours. I guess I was thrown aback initially by a statement that seemed to be an elitist view (taken from the retread post). The amount of cash in your account is irrelevant to me so long as safety is accounted for. That being said I guess we all have our "values" whether it be in our assets or in our way of life. I see no reason to slam others for their choice, for me and mine, we enjoy life period! I, like many of you have seen some unfortunate things in life and perhaps that is why I now feel that my happiness is based solely on the enjoyment of the day regardless of if I have $1,000,000 or $1. To those of you that live for today congratulations! The majority of the members of this forum are as I expected, kind, open hearted and adventurous. To me, that is the spirit of the traveler and I am glad it is not lost.

Does it matter?

Some time ago I posted a question on retreads, whether you would run them or not. And one of the responses was simple, "if you cannot afford new tires you cannot afford to RV". Well that got me thinking about it. Does money matter? I am not saying burn your cash or be careless, what I am saying is that I see no reason why someone cannot RV on the cheap. After all is that not where this traveling lifestyle originated from? You know, the freedom of the road no constraints the willingness to take things as they come, whether it be washing dishes for gas money or bartering. I guess for me the lifestyle is about freedom and freedom has no dollar value. So I ask you; Does it matter? Does financial status matter? (So you guys know I am 31 and on a fixed income, retired from the ARMY for injuries received fighting for freedom)

RE: Can we tow with refrigerator on?

disclaimer: this is a stupid question so I apologize in advance I am new to this whole thing and a buddy of mine that is showing me the ropes (40 years my senior) keeps telling me NEVER EVER leave the propane on when you are not using it. Now, is there an auto shut off with these things in case of an accident if so how would I know if I have one, or are you guys just that trusting. I know this guy is an old schooler but it seems like it would be the safest to shut of the propane while traveling. But cold beers sound about right! Then again I do have a cooler!

RE: would you run retreads?

I hope the original poster has noticed what totally out in left field advise is sometimes given on this board. WHAT?!?!? You mean that everything on this forum is not necessarily the truth?!?!:B Yeah I picked up on it. I was able to weed through the bogus/urban legend aspect of it and found some really great information. It does seem like every posted question has the potential volatility of politics or religion or dare I say abortion! None the less it has been interesting, however I am thinking of changing my name from "colorado caravan" to "to broke to RV" nice ring don't ya think?:W

RE: Vail, CO

Maybe I could plug into one of those million dollar homes, surely they won't notice the power draw. However the aluminum box on wheels might give me away!

Vail, CO

I am looking for campgrounds near Vail for the beginning of June does anyone know of any? I am looking for hookups if possible. I found one that is ridiculously expensive @ close to $50 per night, and the rest have no hookups. So if anyone knows of any please let me know. Thanks

RE: Cool new truck seen today

Duramax is NOT an Isuzu engine. It is a GM engine developed under a joint effort with Isuzu when GM owned approx 30% of the company. Isuzu did most of the mechanical work, GM developed the electronics. The engines are built in Moraine, Ohio. My math may be wrong but if I own 70% and you own 30% I would feel safe stating that I owned the majority. Thus I would put my name/brand above yours indicating primary ownership. Or I guess I could say that the Duramax was an engine built by a multitude of various components that were created through the joint work of companies through out the world. True ownership would have to be broken down by the constituent parts. In which case we would have to list them by usefulness or perhaps by cash invested or time or even weight. You choose. I say I drive a GMC with a Duramax engine thanks to Isuzu. The beauty of my logic is it is mine and makes perfectly good sense to me. And no I am not upset that my BIG 3 American truck has foreign parts.

RE: diesel fuel, value and volatility

I honestly believe that the reason diesel has gotten so high is the U.S. is consuming so much in our wars overseas, I was told to have my joes burn our urine and******with diesel in Iraq. That is a whole lot of diesel for waste disposal! Not to mention that it takes up to 11 gallons of diesel to fire up an Abrams tank. After seeing the waste I cannot believe that the war machine's consumption has nothing to do with it. Taken from Global Security.org: # Fuel Consumption A tank will need approximately 300 gallons every eight hours; this will vary depending on mission, terrain, and weather. A single tank takes 10 minutes to refuel. Refueling and rearming of a tank platoon--four tanks--is approximately 30 minutes under ideal conditions. 0.6 miles per gallon. # 60 gallons per hour when traveling cross-country # 30+ gallons per hour while operating at a tactical ideal # 10 gallons basic idle # A mine plow will increase the fuel consummation rate of a tank by 25 percent

RE: Cool new truck seen today

Duramax is an isuzu engine so there is no telling if a smaller duramax branded engine is out there. Diesel engines are becoming more and more popular these days.

RE: Alternative decor?

You could always purchase a TT that you like, say for the layout, then reupholster it yourself. I remember reading about a couple on this site that did a really great job on theirs for fairly cheap. Plus think of how you do you decorating at the house, often it is the little personal touches that make it hip...hell thats what we plan on doing with ours. Also consider how much you could put into making it your own if you spent a few grand on the TT instead of a bit more, you would have all of that left over cash to personalize it! After all we are relatively young 31 and 26 and plan on making ours one of a kind and keep the budget in check. If you do decide to do it yourself keep us posted.

RE: Duramax & Bio-Diesel

Problem turned out to be the fuel pump went out. He also stated that his filter was pretty clogged. These go hand in hand. I am glad he figured out the issue.
